Black-billed Cuckoo
Boy Scout Woods, High Island • April 2026
I went to High Island with this as my target bird, and I got lucky! Famously elusive, this one hung out for a while for some closeups.
Virginia Rail
Hornsby Bend • April 2026
A very secretive marsh bird - a lucky tip (and more than a little waiting) helped me nail this shot.
Kentucky Warbler
Hooks Woods Sanctuary, High Island • April 2026
A skulky but bright yellow warbler, best seen during fallouts on High Island in my experience!
Scarlet Tanager
Smith Oaks Sanctuary, High Island • April 2026
In Texas we have very few red birds that aren't cardinals, so these flashy birds stand out. Often hidden in the canopy, the boardwalk at Smith Oaks makes them relatively easy to photograph.
Green Heron
Sabine Woods • April 2026
While watching a drip at Sabine Woods in East Texas, I watched this Green Heron snatch a bullfrog from a small pond right in front of me!
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Sabine Woods • April 2026
These birds are some of our showiest warblers, often moving to the ends of branches for great views.
Baltimore Oriole
Sabine Woods • April 2026
Brightly colored but relatively shy, orioles always brighten up a spring birding day.
Yellow-throated Vireo
Smith Oaks Sanctuary, High Island • April 2026
Unlike the very active warblers, vireos move slowly and deliberately when feeding, making nice poses relatively easy (if you can spot them!)
