Scarlet Tanager, Smith Oaks Sanctuary
Birds of High Island
High Island is a migration destination for birds and birders alike, as its small group of oaks and vegetation serve as the perfect place for birds to rest and refuel after their long trips across the ocean. A sudden change in the weather may bring “fallouts” ,when unfavorable winds force birds to land wherever they can, and these incidents are a bonanza for birdwatchers and photographers. At these times, the birds are very tired and hungry, and respectful viewing is key.
